Since No one is Using The Demo Site I Built a WebSite in Under 10 Minutes!

Today I was a bit bored so I decided to fire up Demo Site 2. It Took me a mere 10 minutes to set up a viable web site!

I still can not believe no one is at least using these demo sites for some testing of plugins, etc.

But then again, I guess humans will always be stupid. No offense folks, but this WordPress stuff is so easy a cat could do it….if not distracted by a squirrel….

That is all…

As Usual It Boggles My Mind That Only One Person Has Ever Tried The Demo Sites!

Question-MarkThis site offers free WordPress hosting with virtually no restrictions other than the fact that there are some system limitations. Let’s face it folks, this isn’t here to help folks setup a site that gets a bazillion hits per day, but if you have an idea for a site that would get 50-100 visitors per day, this system will work for you.

Now let’s move on to those Demo Sites, there are 3 of them listed here, there is a How-To which all but spoon feeds you how to set things up and if you have read the articles, you know I can host any domain, even if it isn’t a subdomain type website. Whatever.com will run here, just as easily as as whatever.yourfreewordpres.com. So why are people not trying out the Demo Sites or asking for a site hosting?  I actually don’t have a damned clue!

Perhaps you are uncertain about hidden costs? There are none, zero, zilch nada, zip, yeah, free.

Perhaps you think there is a hidden agenda here? Sorry, I just want to help folks learn how to run a site or simply provide hosting to your small site.

Perhaps you think this is some sort of evil hacking scheme? Uh, no, I can simply get by with setting up virtual servers and doing some routing. No evil geniuses at HQ here.

So those questions being answered, you have to ask yourself one question, “Do I want to try this stuff out?”. If the answer is yes, try out a demo site! There are no sign-ups, no logins, other than to the Demo Server itself, and no reason not to give it a try!

Demo Site 2, while a great success will go offline on Friday or Saturday….

This site will be reverting
This site will be reverting

Demo Site 2 was setup to talk about my new Asus laptop, but soon became a site for testing…

I set it up to pull down all my posts from all my other sites and so far it has worked great! Therefore I can report that the very old multi-importer plugin, which is no longer available on WordPress.org is still functional and useful.

But this site is dedicated to allowing folks to test WordPress and must therefore be reset to an install site. There is a countdown in the right column for those interested in the approximate time this site will revert.

Getting those Cron Events to run on your WordPress Server. It’s not that difficult.

webmin1So perhaps you have setup a server with WordPress and you are using a plugin that requires  the wp_cron.php file to run every now and then. I have spent the evening learning just how to make this happen.

For my example I have the WP RSS Multi Importer plugin installed on this site (and numerous others), and I just got tired of having to go in and make the WordPress Cron fire off and download news feeds. So what to do?

Well suffice to say Google is your best friend to gain new knowledge and then applying a bit of common sense makes the whole process easier. The end result is simply adding a cron job to your server, assuming you are running Linux, this is quite easy and in the video below, you will see that it is super easy when using a program such as WebMin to admin your server.

All you really have to do is fire off the wp_cron.php file in WordPress at appropriate intervals to get your desired results.

The line below is what I used to fix my tablets site so it imports feeds on a very regular basis…
wget http://tablets.yourfreewordpress.com/wp-cron.php?doing_wp_cron=1 > /dev/null 2>&1

Note: If you don’t happen to have access to cron on your web host I will suggest you try out a site such as EasyCron.com. Keep in mind the setup/command is still the same with the exception of not needing the ‘wget’ command.

So for this example we are going to fix up the RSS Multi Importer to grab feeds every 15 or so minutes and then make them into auto posts every 30 minutes. So without further introduction below is the latest in a long line of crappy, but damned informative videos….

So you have your site and are ready to start blogging…what’s next?

Dashboard Image,click for full size.
Dashboard Image,click for full size.

The first thing you want to do is to login and click on the dashboard icon. Then go through everything in that left side menu and see what it does.

Play with everything, because you can simply undo changes when you don’t want them. Fear not the unexplored as you shall regret not having tapped a resource.

The possibilities are endless, with several thousand themes/layouts and plugins.

This is a learning experience, so use it as such and don’t forget to ask questions!

The plugins I recommend are Jetpack, first and foremost as it gives you stats, and the ability to quickly share to Facebook, Twitter, Google and more! You will need a wordpress.com account, but that is easily obtained, so do it and move on to try out the bazillion other free plugins available.
