The current server runs on an Optiplex 745 with 8-gb of ram, but the processor is horribly slow by today’s standards. So that being said I am looking for at quad core (minimum) processor and great graphics and a super decent motherboard that will allow me to upgrade it for a few years.
ANY suggestions are welcome. The hard drive is not really an issue since I already have a 1TB drive with over 2/3 free disk space.
I am trying to move all the virtual hosts on this machine to a new server, because right now the current VM has some serious issues. For the most part it appears like all is well, but I can assure you that it is not. Certain functions have ceased to work at the operating system level and that has me rather nervous, so we will be moving all sites over to Debian 8 in the next week or so.
It would be a fairly simply move had I wrritten up all the tweaks I did to Debian 7.2, but alas I did not. So if the server is down or appears to be broken, fear not, all data is being backed up and hopefully not much will be lost.
All that being said I must take a moment to brag about the device I am using primary to do all this work and that is my LogiTab/Dragon Touch Tablet. You can actually get more info on it at dragontouchx10.yourfreewordpress.com.
Notes on the upgrade: moving to Debian 8 and upgrading the server ram to a total of 8 gb, of which 3 will be reserved for the base Windows 7 operating system, which the VM runs on top of.
I was reading a few stories yesterday about WordPress sites being hacked for various types of evil. The usual hackers infecting machines with malware via injection. So of course I went ahead and checked the server here to make sure we were not among those sites.
The site itself is clean but, the site I used to check it, did find that we are running Apache 2.2.22 and it is vulnerable to some hacks. I know I have the latest patches installed, but I did decide to install the latest Turnkey Linux, Virtual Machine LAMP stack. The install of course is the easy part, then I remembered how much of a hassle it was moving all my stuff off my old Linux PC onto this current version of Linux VM.
Suffice to say, the move will eventually occur, but it may take weeks, as I have to lookup all the steps I had to take to set up the server the first time several months ago.
I will document each and every step this time and post them all here for those interested in setting up their own VM at home.
In the meantime, be assured that I scan the site regularly for security issues and I have about half the world blocked out via IPTables (firewall), so there are no known security issues on this site. Hell, I can’t even get a hacker to try setting up one of the demo sites!
Of course it was one of my own sites, but I figured, what the hell, why not move a dynamic hosted site on a domain that raises flags all over the planet earth to a real, defined domain.
So say hello to tablets.yourfreewordpress.com. It isn’t new, it isn’t amazing, but it works and so could your small website. I will keep hammering away till someone actually takes me up on my offer of a free website and 1-gb free space to learn, play and grow. If this doesn’t appeal to you, move on, nothing to see here but opportunity.
It still puzzles me that no one in the USA has at least inquired about my offer. I know, there are wonderful hosts out there who can do far more than me, but rarely will you find one with low restrictions and the offer of free help.
