So you decided to run your own server on a virtual machine and need some security.

high-class-panasonic-video-camera-camcorderThis little video will show you just a few of the basic methods of killing off those annoying folks who constantly annoy your site.   It will also cement the fact in your tiny brain, that when it comes to crappy music Tim RULES! You will find that if you use a few basic tools that come with a basic VM install from Turnkey Linux Lamp Stack and your router and inside of your Apache server settings that you can keep a majority of dirtbags away from your site.

When it comes to killing IP’s feel free to kill entire blocks of addresses! Sure, you may be killing off a few visitors but on the other hand you are also keeping out the asshat who is determined to access up your server!

Bottom line is that you will need to check your logs daily and look for strange or wrong feeling comments and trackbacks on your site.

So watch the video, learn a little and perhaps avoid a situation that you don’t want to deal with. Not everything is covered here, but be aware learn, use Google to research and never give up!

So Last Night I Defeated the Forces of Evil…or Blocked some Potential Hackers…but…

Crashes are a pain!
Crashes are a pain!

As the headline reads, I spent hours and hours….roughly 7 of them learning IPTables, figuring out how to block IP address blocks and re configuring my router’s built in firewall.

It all seemed to be working…at the end of the evening, or actually somewhere near the wee hours of the morning I bragged about victory and told those hacker bastages to “bring it on!”. That could have been a mistake, because early this morning i was once again greeted with an empty database server.

So this time I will ask politely, please go away you freaking cretins and go get a job, a life and quit overloading the memory in my server and killing my MySql database server.

I am fairly certain that I know who the culprits are, but I won’t name anyone this time……except the French!…The Chinese!, The Ukrainians and those pesky Ruskies.

So I once again say, go ahead, bring it on you miserable bastards, because this time I have backups!

(walking away now, shaking my head knowing that this post was probably a really bad idea, but I am an American and you can’t break me, nor my spirit, nor my resolve…meaning I am not like that twit who resides in OUR White House in DC.)
