Sorry the site was down for a bit today, but on the other hand we have more RAM!

transcend-jm667qlu-2g-400x400-imad4fzrxdn5kn8qSo last night I increased the overall virtual server ram available to about 3.35 gb, which is an increase of roughly 500 mb from the previous total available memory.

I would like to report that it is making the server run much better, except for the fact that the cable company dropped off the internet late this afternoon.

But in truth, all things being equal, the site (and associated sites), should run faster, and have far less delays than previously.

RAM upgrade appears successful…so far.

upgrade-your-RAMAs promised last week, the server has been upgraded.  Like anything else related to upgrading an older machine using after market parts, tonight’s upgrade of the server went well, with a few minor exceptions.

I had to re-order the RAM I installed to stop the errors I received initially. This is probably because I am mixing 667 MHz ram and 800 MHz ram and the old Dell chooses to run it all at the higher speed.  But after fiddling about and doing about 12 reboots all appears to be well. Of course time will tell, but for now, I can say with complete….uh, 65% confidence that the upgrade was a success and that we all have an extra 500 mb of virtual memory for the VM itself and an additional 1.5 gb for the Winderz portion of things.

I did run the Windows diagnostic on ram and it passed. No clue if that test is worth a damn, considering it is from MicroCrap…

So for now, don’t worry, be happy and sign up for a free site!

The server is getting a small upgrade.

transcend-jm667qlu-2g-400x400-imad4fzrxdn5kn8q Currently the server runs on a machine that has 3 gigabytes of RAM. That RAM is shared with Windows 7, which means the actual Linux Virtual Machine (VM) runs on about 1.7 gb of RAM.

Early next week I’ll be adding an additional 2 gb of RAM to the server and allocating roughly 500-750 mb to the VM here.  That should improve performance a little. It will also help my Windows 7 run a bit more efficiently.

I know that this is probably not a concern to those who occasionally read this page, but for anyone wishing to run a site here, it will make a great deal of difference.
