The first thing you want to do is to login and click on the dashboard icon. Then go through everything in that left side menu and see what it does.

Play with everything, because you can simply undo changes when you don’t want them. Fear not the unexplored as you shall regret not having tapped a resource.

The possibilities are endless, with several thousand themes/layouts and plugins.

This is a learning experience, so use it as such and don’t forget to ask questions!

The plugins I recommend are Jetpack, first and foremost as it gives you stats, and the ability to quickly share to Facebook, Twitter, Google and more! You will need a wordpress.com account, but that is easily obtained, so do it and move on to try out the bazillion other free plugins available.

It has come to my Attention that everyone doesn’t find this Server Stuff Easy.

Tim not shown actual size

I have been setting up and running servers for quite a few years now. I have quite the collection of domain names, failed and successful sites and I understand all the basic principles involved.

What I myself have finally realized is that far too many folks just don’t read instructions and therefore think that this stuff is difficult, or they simply bypass the instructions and do what they think will work. As we all know, this is the path to not quite getting it right on the first try. Believe me, this is EXACTLY how I learned this stuff. I jumped through the instruction set, failed to see vital instructions and in more than one case was saddled with a “time to wipe this and start over” situation.

So, your best bet when using my little service on this site is to ask questions if you are unclear about ANYTHING! The only stupid questions ever asked, in the history of mankind, are those that were not asked.

So, all that being said, here is how you get yourself setup and running on a free site.

  • You ask me to set you up and provide me a sub-domain name. A sub-domain is the name in front of,  .yourfreewordpress.com, such as www, which of course points right back to this site, while on the other hand, tablets.yourfreewordpress.com points to my “Tim’s Tablet Website”. Simple enough?
  • Next you go to the subdomain you requested and run the WordPress install using the subdomain, database user name and database password assigned to you, which you will have received from me via various methods of Internet communication.
  • Then you set-up your site and HOPEFULLY register on this site so you can ask questions in the forum or send me a PM via this site.

So that is the skinny on getting set-up and picking a domain name. Of course you are welcome to use the dummy sites I have setup to test out the procedure and see how thing work. Check this post for those addresses….

That is tonite’s lesson. Now lets get a few sites going people!

So those very few folks interested in this, might find this interesting.

So you might just be wondering what the heck the desktop of this super server looks like. Take a look to the left, or click it for a new full size image.

My guess is that it looks a lot like what everyone else out there is running. Some Win 7,  a little bit VMware. The whole idea of this site is to teach you that you, yeah, you, with your Dell, HP, home built PC,  with a decent processor and a few spare gb of ram can run a virtual server.

I am not selling ANYTHING here, but a little knowledge and at zero cost. So drop in and learn. Or feel free to be a hacker and try to destroy, because this site gets backed up everyday and your efforts to stifle knowledge would just prove that you are unfit for normal society. On the other hand if you want to try something out, for Keehrist sakes, try one of the free dummy sites I posted about yesterday, or ASK me to set you up a more permanent site!

That is all, dismissed!

Tim
